Program options

In order to operate correctly, CompetitionPilot needs to know how to connect to the GPS and other parameters, such as the communication protocol (NMEA or Garmin) and the connection type (serial cable or BlueTooth). From this page you can also disable the "Application" and power keys and choose the language.

Here you can set the time intervals over which CompetitionPilot calculates the time averages of several parameters. You can choose whether you want the efficiency and the arrival altitudes values to be immediate or more stable.

Description

Protocol

CompetitionPilot supports the NMEA protocol and, partially, the proprietary Garmin one. You have to select the protocol used by your GPS. Almost all the GPS units around are compatible with the NMEA protocol. The Garmin protocol has the additional advantage with respect to the NMEA one of allowing to import in CompetitionPilot the routes stored in the GPS.

Connection

CompetitionPilot can communicate to BlueTooth GPSs or to GPS units equipped with a serial port.

When you choose BlueTooth, CompetitionPilot immediately starts searching for available BlueTooth devices and shows them in a list. Select your GPS from the list. Its address will be shown below BlueTooth address. When CompetitionPilot is exited and restarted it will try and connect to the last device used. To start a new search (for example to connect to a different unit) you have to reset the BlueTooth address with the button on the bottom of the page.

Baud rate

Most of the GPS devices using the NMEA protocol over a serial connection operates at 4800 baud rate. Some of them, anyway, use non-standard values. To communicate with these units, CompetitionPilot allows you to manually select the serial baud rate (from 4800 to 57600 baud.) Selecting auto makes CompetitionPilot use 4800 baud for NMEA protocol or 9600 for Garmin protocol. The auto setting does NOT mean that CompetitionPilot will try to recognise automatically a device using a non-standard baud rate.

Language

Italian or English. Maybe in the future I shall add more languages... (not very likely, to be honest)

Disable application key

Typically, if you press the "Application" key while using a Palm program, the program exits. To avoid this when using CompetitionPilot, you can disable this key. in this case, if you want to exit the program you have to select the cPilot/Exit menu. An "are you sure?" dialog will appear.

Disable power key

This checkbox enables/disables the power off key. When you exit CompetitionPilot, the key will be enabled again automatically.

Advanced

By pressing this button a new page will be shown allowing to set the time intervals over which CompetitionPilot calculates the time averages of several parameters. You can choose whether you want the efficiency and the arrival altitudes values to be immediate or more stable.

Advanced

From here you can change the time intervals over which CompetitionPilot calculates the time averages of several parameters. If you set shorter times, the data shown by the program will be more sensitive to the movement of the air mass through which you are flying. Longer times will make the data more stable.

The parameters that you can affect from here are the efficiency and the arrival altitudes at the next waypoint and at goal. Time intervals can be set from 10 s up to 120 s by means of the drop-down menus.

Pressing the Reset to defaults button makes the predefined values to be restored.
